QZ: Chapter 39.3

Ying Feng did as told, and watched as she attach the testing instruments to Ling Xiao.

The test results came out soon. After Yao Tai had gone through the report, she itched to strike Ying Feng.

Ying Feng did not understand why she was looking at him with a vicious gaze. He also did not know what instruments had been connected to Ling Xiao’s temples.

Yao Tai pressed a few keys on the instrument. Blue numbers appeared on the panel and began to rise gradually.

“Do you know what this is?” she asked indignantly.

Ying Feng shook his head.

“A machine for aiding sleep. It will make the user fall into a deep sleep temporarily. But, when he wakes up, the previously accumulated stress will return to him multifold; it is akin to drinking poison to quench thirst, so one would use it only as a last resort. He is sleeping very deeply right now and won’t hear us.”

Ying Feng wrinkled his brows.

“I asked you to care for him properly. But, how have you been taking care of him? Do you realize that he hasn’t eaten for three days?”

Ying Feng was confused, “Why?”

“I’ll ask you then, ‘Have you given him the secondary card?'”

“… He didn’t mention it to me.”

Yao Tai tried to restrain the urge to hit Ying Feng.

“Didn’t I tell you that once Ling Xiao becomes a Qizi, his primary card will be demonetized, and all the money in it will be transferred to yours? Have you not noticed that the total amount in your card has increased?”

Ying Feng only then remembered that when he came back from field training, there was an extra four dollars in his card. The amount was too small. So, he thought he had made a mistake.

“Just because he didn’t mention, you wouldn’t ask?” Yao Tai pointed at the two of them angrily. “One wouldn’t ask and one wouldn’t mention… are you waiting until he reached the brink of death due to starvation?”

“He hasn’t eaten or slept for three days, and has just finished a vigorous physical activity. Him managing to persist until now is already a miracle! Even with my physique, I won’t be able to withstand it!”

“The way I see it, your disorder period is more serious. People who can’t keep their emotions in check are not qualified to be the Qizhu. I’d rather send him to CDC than leave him together with you. At least, he wouldn’t die from hunger!”

As Yao Tai sternly reprimanded, Ying Feng remained silent the entire process.

Yao Tai became so angry and had to pause for a while before continuing.

“I will now warn you that his psychological rating has reached E-. There is only a small gap from mandatory hospitalization. But, this is still not the most important fact.”

“He now has mild mental damage. This sort of damage will accompany him forever. It cannot be cured. Have you seen the principal? He is a model of severe mental damage. Do you want Ling Xiao to follow in his footsteps?”

“If you continue to act recklessly this way, he will die. I am not joking!” She tried to calm down.

“Ying Feng, Tianxiu people can have only one partner in their lifetime. If the Qizi passes on before maturing fully, the Qizhu will also stop his growth. Your ability will be curbed. So, even if you only think for yourself, you should still take care of him well! You’d better get rid of your unrealistic thoughts before it is too late. Your Qizi in this life is the very person lying on the bed right now!”

Ying Feng moved away his head uneasily and looked at Ling Xiao, who was on the hospital bed. Only then did he notice that Ling Xiao’s chest was undulating faster than a normal person’s. It seemed as if he could only breathe in halfway before having to breathe out, just like an animal.

“Why is his breathing so fast?”

“The heartbeat and breathing of Qizi will be faster than before. Haven’t you felt that your own heartbeat has slowed down? The average lifespan of Qizi’s is less than that of Qizhu’s, not to mention, your irresponsible actions have made his lifespan shorter.”

Yao Tai looked at the time. “He can still sleep for another hour. The disorder period had passed. It has been dragged on for one more day because of you. Tonight, the pain will return more intensely than the previous days. Let me see how you will manage then.”

She turned around and left. Only Ying Feng and Ling Xiao remained in the hospital room. Ying Feng walked up to the hospital bed and watched Ling Xiao sleeping with a serene face. The person who would usually make various threatening gestures would also hide away his fangs and claws when asleep. The quarrel just now had not disturbed him in a bit. Ying Feng could not have imagined that this was his first sleep since the adult ritual.

The blue light on the machine flashed rhythmically, the number of flashes counting down the remaining time. In this cruel system, the Qizi could only rely on himself to overcome the difficulties- the most advanced medical instruments could simply provide a short respite.

When Ling Xiao woke up, the room was empty. He probably had just enjoyed the deepest sleep in his entire life- one without any dreams. 

He sat up and found out that his head was attached to an unknown instrument. After removing it, he made to get out of the bed when his hand bumped into a strange object.

He lowered his head to see a packet of banana-flavored energy bread set beside his hand.

T/N: I must apologize that I made a mistake in the previous post where I used ‘Tiansu’ instead of ‘Tianxiu’ for the word ‘天宿’. I have now fixed the error. It turns out that the second character has a literal meaning with a different pronunciation and means ’eminence’ or ‘veteran’. Combined, it would mean ‘Veterans of the Sky.’ Well, isn’t that fancy?
